Affidavit: Muncie man said he made 'anarchist's cookbook grenades'

MUNCIE, Ind. — A Muncie man arrested Friday on explosives-related charges told police he had made three "makeshift anarchist's cookbook grenades."

Giovanni Jaquel Rembert, 28, continued to be held in the Delaware County jail on Monday under a $90,000 cash bond, preliminarily charged with three counts of possession of a construction device, a Level 2 felony carrying up to 30 years in prison.

City police were called to an apartment house in the 3300 block of West Noel Drive on Friday afternoon after the three devices were found, in a backpack, in the building's basement.

Rembert, who lived at that address, told Deputy Police Chief Chris Deegan he had made the devices "a long time ago."

In a later interview with a city police detective, Rembert said he made the devices "for self defense" and that his goal was to "kill someone before they were able to kill him."

The Muncie man said he was aware of several people who were "possibly trying to harm him."

He also said he believed "shrapnel and bullets would have went everywhere" had he ignited one of the devices, which he referred to as "makeshift anarchist's cookbook grenades."

The Delaware County Sheriff's Department's bomb squad was called to the scene and disabled the devices before moving them to another location.

Federal agents were also notified and took part in the ensuing investigation.
