An Afghan special forces commando, who came to the UK with his family, is being held after armed police raided his quarantine hotel in Manchester.

The man, who arrived in Britain on an evacuation flight from Kabul, was detained around 10 days ago on the orders of the Home Office.

Officials refused to confirm why the man had been detained, but it is not believed to be a terror-related matter or one of concern to MI5.

Members of the Afghan special forces who supported the British military effort were given safe haven in the UK following the withdrawal of Allied troops.

Greater Manchester Police and the Home Office refused to comment on the case, but it is thought the investigation may be related to immigration matters.

Last month, it emerged that a person on the UK's no-fly list was flown into Birmingham as part of the evacuation operation. The no-fly list is designed to block people who are considered a security threat from reaching the UK.

However following an investigation it was determined that they were not a person of interest and no further action was taken.
