Africentric boys basketball standout Dailyn Swain commits to Xavier

During a packed ceremony Sept. 2 at Africentric, senior boys basketball standout Dailyn Swain answered a series of questions from 247sports.com and then announced where he was headed.

Swain, considered a four-star recruit as a 6-foot-6 wing player, committed to Xavier a little more than two months before he can officially sign with the perennially strong Big East program.

Arizona State, Arkansas, Clemson and Ohio State were the other finalists for Swain, who led the Nubians to a 23-6 finish last winterthat included an appearance in a Division III state semifinal.

“I’ve got an opportunity as a freshman to come in and play really early,” Swain said. “(They) see me as a position-less basketball player. I can run the 1, 2, 3.”

Swain was the Player of the Year in the district and in the state last season, averaging 21 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots while leading the Nubians to their second consecutive City League-South Division title and the City championship.

He is one of three players considered four-star recruits reeled in by coach Sean Miller, who began his second tenure as Xavier's coach in March. Miller previously led the Musketeers from 2004-09 before heading Arizona’s program for 12 seasons.

Miller replaced Travis Steele, who was coach of Xavier the last four seasons but failed to reach the NCAA tournament and was fired after the Musketeers won their first-round NIT game last winter. Xavier went on to win the NIT under interim coach Jonas Hayes, who is now Georgia State’s coach.

“It’s so awesome,” Africentric coach Michael Bates said. “By far he’s the most highly recruited player we’ve ever had. It’s an unbelievable moment for our school, our basketball program and as a coach I was blessed to be able to coach a player of this caliber. It’s been a blessing these last three years.”
