Afro-Latina Activists and Influencers To Follow This Hispanic Heritage Month
National Hispanic Heritage Month is right around the corner. The annual celebration runs from September 15 to October 15 and honors the culture and history of Hispanic and Latinx Americans. This is done by highlighting their diverse backgrounds, traditions, and achievements. During this month, various events, festivals, and educational activities are organized to promote awareness and appreciation of Hispanic culture and history.
What better way to celebrate the month than by supporting the Afro-Latinas who are trying to make a better tomorrow! There are a slew of Afro-Latina activists and influencers who are making waves and shaking things up. Here are a few who are showing the world their vibrant personalities and amazing work.
Elizabeth Acevedo
Elizabeth Acevedo is an award-winning writer and performer. She was named Young People’s Poet Laureate by the Poetry Foundation in 2022. She has recently written a book called “Family Lore” which is an adult novel that focuses on a Dominican-American family, some magical powers and the ins and outs of the family’s dynamic.
Carolina Contreras
Carolina Contreras is a beauty influencer who has set out to change the hair space for Afro-Latina women. When she opened the Miss Rizos salon in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, she decided that all hair types needed to be tended to. When one thinks of a “Domican salon” the initial thoughts are blowouts and straight hair. Contreras’ salon is inclusive of all hair types and hair styles!
Danteé Ramos
Danteé Ramos is a beauty influencer and journalist Afro-Latina who puts Black women at the forefront of her work. She makes content to share that Black women come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Coming from a Black mother and Salvadorian father, she is often considered to be just Hispanic because of her skin tone but has consistently pushed back against any notion that Black women can’t look like her.
