Aftermath of fatal blast at Kabul mosque

STORY: The explosion occurred on Wednesday (May 25) evening, authorities said, the same day deadly explosions hit passenger vehicles in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif.

A Taliban official who spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak with media organizations said explosives were placed inside the mosque's pulpit and more than a dozen people were dead, including the mosque's imam, and that at least 26 were injured.

Growing violence in recent months has caused security challenges for the Taliban who took over the country in August as foreign forces withdrew. The Islamic State has claimed several attacks, often targeting the Shi'ia minority.
