Afternoon power outage causes east side headache

Apr. 5—Logansport residents on the city's eastside experienced a disruption in their afternoon after a fiber optics company hit underground electric wires in the area of High Street and Yorktown.

Residents in the area and many businesses were without power for several hours. Several traffic lights were also affected, but no major traffic incidents were reported.

Lorri Foster, director of marketing and communications at Logansport Utilities, said in an email that LU crews had found a way to bypass some systems to get power restored within two to three hours.

However, a larger power outage would need to be scheduled at a later date to fully repair the damage, she said.

Logansport Utilities posted a Facebook announcement at 12:30 p.m. about the disruption, first suggesting that it could take eight to 10 hours to fully restore power. Most of the residents and businesses affected by the power outage were with electricity by at about 4 p.m.

When the outage first occurred, many of the lights within the vicinity of Walmart were blinking, the store had no power and employees stood at the entrances turning customers away, telling them the interruption could last up to eight hours.

A Logansport Memorial Hospital press release said that the Express Medical Center would be closed for the remainder of the day but was expected to reopen this morning, April 5.
