The Afterparty, the series from The Lego Movie and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, has been cancelled by Apple TV+ after two seasons.

The show, which stars Tiffany Haddish, Sam Richardson and Zoë Chao, sees a group of people get involved in two separate murder mysteries, one per season, with each episode focusing on a different character's interpretation of events.

The show attracted guest stars like Channing Tatum and Elijah Wood, and received critical praise for its ensemble cast's comedy chops and engaging whodunnits.

TVLine broke the news about the cancellation, while Deadline states that studio Sony Pictures Television plans to shop it around to other distributors.

No official reason is given for the cancellation, but it is speculated that season 2 did not have the same impact as its predecessor when it released this summer, especially with the return of Only Murders in the Building on Hulu/Disney+.

There is also talk about Apple evaluating its TV portfolio following the end of the Hollywood writers strike.

Another Lord and Miller project that came out this year was the adult animated comedy Strays, which centres on a group of dogs who decide to seek revenge.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, the duo revealed what they left on the cutting room floor, specifically citing a scene in a dog pound.

"There was just too much poo," Lord joked, with Miller adding: "Too much poo! It was longer and more graphic, and we said, 'This is just… We’re losing people here. We’ve gone too far.' And so believe it or not, that was one of those moments."

The Afterparty seasons 1 and 2 can be streamed on Apple TV+ now.
