Ag Career Days for students returns to Kewaunee County; sponsors and volunteers needed
KEWAUNEE – Ag Career Days is making a return for area middle school students after a five-year absence, and sponsors and volunteers are being sought for the event.
Presented by the Kewaunee County Economic Development Corp., Ag Career Days is a free, two-day, farm career-exploration experience designed for students to identify how their interests could transfer to a potential career in the agriculture industry, a large and vital part of the economy in Kewaunee and Door counties and surrounding areas. It is expected to bring more than 900 seventh and eighth grade students from the Algoma, Denmark, Kewaunee, Luxemburg-Casco and Southern Door school districts, as well as parochial and home-schooled students.
The event will take place April 18 and 19 at Pagel’s Ponderosa Dairy in Kewaunee, which hosted it in 2016. The KCEDC launched Ag Career Days in 2012 and held it every other year through 2018, becoming recognized in that time as one of Wisconsin’s largest gatherings for exploring careers in agriculture. It has not taken place since 2018, when it was held at Kinnard Farms in Casco, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are excited to bring back Ag Career Days,” KCEDC Executive Director Ben Nelson said in a news release. “KCEDC has a strong commitment to supporting the agriculture industry, which is so important to our area. Ag Career Days is a hands-on opportunity for middle-school students to learn more about the various aspects of agriculture, allowing them to tailor their high-school coursework towards a planned career path.”
Ag Career Days will highlight a cross-section of the wide-ranging, potential career areas. Participating students will be divided into clusters, and every cluster will rotate through eight different stations. Each station will have different presenters who work in some aspect of the agriculture industry. Half of the students will take part on the first day, the other half on the second day.
Among the topics expected to be covered are agronomy, cropping, horticulture, animals, animal nutrition, milk testing, cheese making, agriculture support services, the business of agriculture, and technology.
