Agapao Coffee likely not moving into Ecco space

Mar. 6—The anticipated Agapao Coffee takeover of Ecco Espresso & Gelato, 128 E. Marcy St., has steamed into the ether.

Agapao owner Dave Black said a lease was in place last year, but he never got a key.

"Ecco chose not to contact me back," Black said.

Ecco owner Matt Durkovich locked up Ecco in early November and posted a note on the door that he was taking a break until Jan. 1.

"I'm taking a little breather," Durkovich said in mid-November. "Just pausing. I am assessing my options. We are gently reaching out to the restaurant community."

Durkovich did not respond to a New Mexican phone message.

Black approached Durkovich in mid-November and told The New Mexican he hoped to have Agapao within the Ecco space as soon as after Thanksgiving.

The Ecco space has been closed for more than four months. Durkovich had opened his espresso and gelato shop in 2005.

Black has an Agapao shop across the street a couple hundred feet to the west of Ecco and a parking lot drive-up kiosk on St. Michael's Drive, and he distributes his coffee at Sprouts Farmers Market stores, some Albertsons and a handful of other local establishments.
