🌱 Agoura Hills Wildlife Crossing Broke Ground + Truckers Protest On 5

Hello, neighbors; today is National Picnic Day! It's me again, Sylvia, your host of the Los Angeles Daily.

There was a groundbreaking ceremony for the wildlife crossing that will go over the 101. Also, truckers near Griffith Park protested high diesel prices. Finally, the mask mandate is back on L.A. public transportation.

First, today's weather:

Sunny and pleasant. High: 73 Low: 59.

Here are the top five stories in Los Angeles today:

  1. On Friday, a day after an 18-month-old mountain lion named P-97 was killed on the 405, construction crews broke ground on the wildlife crossing that will stretch over the 101 in Agoura Hills. Building the 200-feet bridge is expected to cost $90 million and may make “more room to roam for animals stifled by urban development, including big cats, coyotes, deer, lizards, snakes and other creatures.” It’s important to note that there are “more than 450 animal species” in the area. (KTLA)

  2. On Friday morning, 10 semi-trucks shut down the 5 near the 134 interchange in the Griffith Park area. They protested high gas prices. “The trucks had a sign which read, ‘Lower diesel prices, brokers need to be controlled, ripping off customers and carriers’. Some protesters walked out onto the freeway holding signs.” Thirty minutes and a conversation with the CA Highway Patrol later, the trucks moved off the highway. (CBS)

  3. U.S. District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle struck down the mask mandate for public transportation earlier this week. On Thursday, L.A. County health officials “issued a new COVID-19 health order, mandating masks on trains and buses, in taxis and ride-sharing vehicles, and inside airports and train and bus stations.” (Patch)

  4. Friday morning at 11 a.m., there was a meeting with “officials from the U.S. State Department, U.S. Attorney’s Office, Consul General for LA’s Peruvian Consulate, & UCLA.” Called a “repatriation ceremony,” it was the return of “cultural pieces following investigations by the FBI’s Art Crime Team.” (FBI)

  5. A Seinfeld-themed food truck is in town. This weekend, it will “park at Abbot Kinney (Giant Wheel Court) from noon through 6 p.m., and then again at Irvine Spectrum from noon through 6 p.m. Sunday.” Dishes might include muffin tops, big salads, spicy chicken, and paella. (Patch)
