Agyemang scores twice to lift URI

Sep. 19—Patrick Agyemang was expecting a big season during his redshirt senior campaign with the University of Rhode Island men's soccer team.

It may have started slower than expected, but the East Hartford High grad got on the right track Saturday.

Agyemang scored both goals as Rhode Island played Fordham to a 2-2 tie in Atlantic-10 play at Jack Coffey Field in the Bronx.

The goals were the first of the season for Agyemang, a 6-foot-4 forward. He entered the campaign on the 2022 MAC Hermann Trophy preseason watch list, an award which recognizes the national Player of the Year.

Fordham (2-1-4, 0-0-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead Saturday thanks to goals from Florian Deletioglu and Nathan Simes in the first 5:04 of the game.

Agyemang cut the deficit to one for Rhode Island (3-0-4, 0-0-1) when he converted a penalty kick at 22:03. He tied it with a header at 83:53 following Edvin Akselsen's corner kick.

Agyemang has appeared in five games for Rhode Island this season, making two starts. His two goals are tied for second most on the team while his five points are tied for third. Besides his two goals, Agyemang has an assist.

Max Hinke made five saves for Rhode Island while Demetri Skoumbakis stopped three shots for Fordham.

Rhode Island is back in action Tuesday when it hosts Albany.

UConn: Frantz Pierrot scored the tying goal for Huskies in their 1-1 draw at Creighton Sunday to open Big East play.

The game originally started Saturday night, but was halted 12:59 into the game due to lightning.

Creighton (3-1-3, 0-0-1) got on the board first 7:16 into the game when Owen O'Malley beat goalie Michael Stone. When play resumed Sunday, Pierrot tied it for the Huskies (2-3-1, 0-0-1) at 20:13 following a pass from Scott Testori.

Stone finished with three saves while Paul Kruse stopped two shots for Creighton.

UConn's next game is Tuesday at Dartmouth.

Endicott: Zach Regulbuto (Somers) didn't need to make a save as the Gulls blanked Gordon 2-0 in a Commonwealth Coast Conference game Saturday.

It's the first shutout of the season for the senior, who has a 3-1-1 record in net for Endicott (4-2-1, 1-0-0). Tiago Frazao and Joe Mepham each had a goal and an assist.

Gordon is 1-4-0 (0-1-0).

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

UConn: The Huskies won two matches Saturday at Gampel Pavilion to finsh the Dog Pound Challenge a perfect 3-0.

UConn won the first match against Brown 3-1 (25-16, 25-19, 18-25, 32-30). Jasmine Davis had 15 kills and seven digs for the Huskies (6-5) while Caylee Parker had 12 kills and 13 digs.

In match two, a 3-2 (25-11, 26-24, 25-23, 23-25,15-9) win over Bryant, Parker had 20 kills and 16 digs while Madi Whitmire had 49 assists and eight digs.

UConn is at Seton Hall Friday.

Sacred Heart: Sophomore Cam Luginbuhl (Tolland) played well as the Pioneers split a Saturday doubleheader at the Yale Invitational in New Haven.

In match one, a 3-0 win (25-22, 25-19, 25-22) over Villanova for Sacred Heart (6-7), Luginbuhl had a team-high 11 kills and 11 points. She added six digs and two assists.

In Sacred Heart's 3-0 loss (25-13, 25-16, 25-14) to Yale later on Saturday, Luginbuhl had four kills and two digs.

Sacred Heart hosts LIU Friday.

FIELD HOCKEY

UConn: McKenna Sergi scored twice to lead the 11th-ranked Huskies to a 3-1 over No. 16 William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia Sunday.

It was the fifth-straight game against a top 25 team for UConn (6-1). The Huskies were 4-1 in those games, the lone lose coming at No. 8 Rutgers Sept. 2

Claire Jandewerth got UConn on the board 39 seconds into Sunday's game. Sergi made it 2-0 later in the first quarter, and put the Huskies up three in the third.

Sol Simone had two assists in the win while Morgan Kaufmann had one. Cheyenne Sprecher made five saves in the win.

Molly Schuma had the goal for William & Mary (5-3). Maddie George made 11 saves.

UConn welcomes Liberty Friday.

ECSU: South Windsor's Sarah Gallagher made seven saves as the Warriors fell 3-1 at Keene State Saturday in Little East play.

Gallagher has started all five games for Eastern (2-3, 0-2). She's allowing 2.00 goals per game and has a 0.714 save percentage.

Keene State is 2-2 (1-0).

MEN'S GOLF

Bentley: Jared Walter (South Windsor) is one of seven golfers tied for 18th after shooting a 4-over-par 74 on Day 1 of the Fanklin Pierce Fall Invitational Sunday at Northern Spy Golf Club in Townsend, Massachusetts.

The senior recorded four birdies in the first round. He was one of three Falcons to shoot 4-over.

Bentley is in a four-way tie for fifth place with a team score of 19-over-par 299. Southern New Hampshire (6-over) leads the team standings while Alejandro Gomez (Dominican College) and Pablo Hidalgo (Felician College) are tied for first at 3-under.
