Plainview boys hit 11 3-pointers, beat Winfield for third AHSAA basketball state title in five years

BIRMINGHAM – Plainview boys basketball hit 11 3-pointers and beat Winfield 77-60 in the AHSAA 3A state championship Friday at Legacy Arena, winning their third state championship in five seasons.

Luke Smith scored 18 points and Cole Millican 22 with four steals for Plainview (31-6), which got 16 points from Dylan Haymon.

Logan Feltman and Ja'borri McGhee combined for all but two points for Winfield (30-6).

The Pirates struggled with Plainview's press and physical defense as the Bears scored 15 points off eight first half turnovers.

Plainview made four 3-pointers in the second quarter to take a 38-20 lead into halftime. Plainview had just five turnovers and shot 20-for-29 from the free-throw line.

The closest Winfield came in the second half was 16 points. McGhee finished with 38 points and 11 rebounds on 15-for-26 shooting and Winfield got 20 points and 11 rebounds from Feltman.

During the two games of its second straight Final Four appearance, Winfield got 111 of its 120 total points from McGhee and Feltman. Winfield last won a state championship in 1952.
