Star Wars spin-off Ahsoka dropped its first trailer yesterday, and it was a treat for fans of Star Wars Rebels: there was Hera Syndulla, Sabine Wren, Chopper and, following on from a plot thread teased in The Mandalorian season 2, the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Since we only saw the back of Thrawn's head in the trailer, fans have been dying to know who is playing the beloved villain in his live-action debut, and now it's been confirmed.

Announced at Star Wars Celebration, which Digital Spy attended, Lars Mikkelsen is officially playing Thrawn in live-action, after previous delivering a chilling vocal performance for him in Rebels.

At the Ahsoka panel, Rosario Dawson explained that her titular character is "driven by a desire to do good", and is searching for Thrawn because she feels like everyone else in the galaxy is ignoring the threat that he possesses.

Considering this is the time where the Empire was mostly defeated after the death of Palpatine in Return of the Jedi, it's perhaps not surprising that people aren't paying attention to Thrawn.

But those of you who saw Rebels or read the original (now non-canon) novels that he first appeared in will know that Thrawn is a master strategist who was constantly a few steps ahead, so Ahsoka on her own definitely has her work cut out for her.

Other Star Wars TV projects got juicy updates at this year's Celebration, with a release month for Andor season 2, casting news for The Acolyte, and a lot of details about the Skeleton Crew series.

Meanwhile, a whole new trilogy of films was announced, with one of them featuring Daisy Ridley returning as Rey 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker.

The Mandalorian season 3 is streaming on Disney+, with new episodes on Wednesdays. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and the entire Skywalker Saga are available on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K now, as well as on Disney+.
