AI-powered marketplace in Maryland helping manufacturers nationwide

MARYLAND (DC News Now) — Xometry has been helping manufacturers across the nation since 2013.

“So when Moderna is creating the vaccine for COVID, parts for the vaccine mixers are being manufactured in the Xometry marketplace,” said Randy Altschuler, CEO of Xometry. “When you go to the airport and you see the Clear stand there…some of the Clear parts are made through this Xometry marketplace.”

The company has been even more relevant following the pandemic.

“You know, there’s a lot of talk in this country about our declining manufacturing base, and now with geopolitical concerns and COVID,” he said. “We need to help our manufacturers.”

Xometry opened a second office in Maryland early last year, as it simplifies a process that was once seen as daunting.

“You can go to our website, you can upload your design file — they call it CAD software, your 3D CAD software — and you answer a number of questions and you immediately get a price,” he said.

The company is also incorporating artificial intelligence, as it tries to make its customers’ lives easier.

“We’re using AI to actually price that and find the optimal solution for that engineer. In the past, it was all done manually,” he said.

In a recent survey conducted by Xometry, 90 percent of people say that “Marylanders should be in trained in AI, robotics and automation.”

“That would give us a real opportunity right here in Maryland to become some of the leaders in manufacturing,” he said.
