The Detroit Lions selected Michigan edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson with the No. 2 overall pick in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Here are three things to know Hutchinson.

1. Was a legacy player at Michigan

Hutchinson’s father, Chad, was a defensive lineman at Michigan from 1989-92 where he served as a team captain and was an All-American as well as the team MVP in 1992. He went on to sign with Dallas as an undrafted free agent and lasted three years in the league, also playing for Chicago. He is now an emergency room doctor in Royal Oak, Michigan.

However, Michigan legend Steve Hutchinson, who played for the Wolverines a decade after Chad, has occasionally been mistaken as Aidan’s father.

Last year, in fact, Steve Hutchinson was recognized by the school for his recent induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame the night the Wolverines defeated Washington. Afterward, former Michigan wide receiver Braylon Edwards tweeted how cool it was that Aidan had 2.5 sacks on the night his dad was honored and Aidan had to correct the mistake in his reply to Edwards.

2. Podcast has detailed his football journey

Hutchinson teamed up with Pro Football Focus’ Austin Gayle on a podcast called Hutch that has detailed his life in football, starting from the beginning when he was a kid, through the draft.

It is four episodes long and also touches on his high school career, his first two seasons at Michigan, the 2021 season when the Wolverines finally ended their losing streak to Ohio State and won the Big 10 title and the Big 10 championship game victory, and finally his preparation for the draft.

“We're bringing a lot of people on it to kind of talk about my journey and my experiences at Michigan and kind of my journey on my path to the draft,” he said at the Combine before the podcast debuted on all the usual platforms.

3. He understands the comparisons to Joey Bosa

Given that he’s 6-foot-5 and he so often wins reps with his quickness, he has been compared to the Chargers’ Joey Bosa during the draft process, and Hutchinson gets why.

“I do think aspects of it are similar,” he said of his pass rush skill set. “I've watched a lot of film on Joey and he's a very talented player, and he's a good person to learn from.”

However, the player Hutchinson wants to become is T.J. Watt, the Steelers’ pass rush extraordinaire.

“I just think the way he rushes, how relentless he is, it's very fun to watch and I think that's why he's so damn productive,” Hutchinson said.
