Since 1994, good-hearted cyclists have gathered from all over the world to participate in the AIDS/LifeCycle fundraising event — an arduous 545-mile, 7-day journey from San Francisco to Los Angeles via bicycle. That is until 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic caused the event to be cancelled for the first time.

After a two-year hiatus, the event made a triumphant return this year by raising $17.8 million for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and HIV services provided by the Los Angeles LGBT Center, as reported by POZ magazine. This broke the previous record of $16.7 million raised in 2019.

“The contributions of thousands of people who are part of the AIDS/LifeCycle community — riders, roadies, staff and donors — provide the resources necessary to continue this fight,” said Joe Hollendoner, the LGBT Center’s new CEO, in a press release. “The donations, through hard work and determination, support medical care and social services to those living with HIV and make it possible to offer prevention tools, such as PrEP, to people most at risk of becoming infected.”

Dr. Tyler TerMeer, CEO of San Francisco AIDS Foundation and former Plus cover star, added, “Year after year, AIDS/LifeCycle continues to be a critical way that we raise support for HIV services, increase awareness about the impact of HIV and come together in solidarity as a community.”

Registration for next year’s ride (June 4-10, 2023) will open August 17, 2022. In addition to being a rider, there are numerous other ways to participate in AIDS/Lifecycle, like being a roadie or an @Home Hero. Visit AIDSLifeCycle.org to learn more.
