AIE softball makes school history. Area teams win region track & field titles and more results

The Academy for Innovative Education Charter (AIE) softball program won the young school’s first team district championship by beating the top two seeds.

AIE softball started six years ago in 2017 with a middle school team. In 2021, the Aviators began its high school program.

In 2023, this marked the first time AIE softball competed in the district tournament for the District 15-2A softball championship.

The team was challenged with a 22-game schedule in the regular season, competing with top 10 teams from Miami Dade and Broward counties. The Aviators went 8-14.

AIE’s top performers in the regular season were pitcher Mia Gil who struck out 122 batters. She also contributed on offense with a .269 batting average and 17 RBI. Fellow juniors Alexa Torres (.432 batting avg, 38 hits, 15 RBI) and Sofia Garcia (.343 batting avg, 23 hits, 15 RBI) led the young team.

Sophomore Alexa Garofalo ( .418 batting avg, 38 hits, 20 RBI) caught almost every game with a .977 fielding percentage and threw out 8 out 22 runners stealing. Also helping AIE are sophomore Emily Gonzalez (a track star, too), freshmen Amanda Torres, Mia Gonzalez, Selenia Martinez and Maddy Baldwin; 8th graders Lily Gil and Olivia Garcia; and 7th graders Bella Barreiro and Sarah Utrera.

District Championship: AIE 8, Chaminade-Madonna 2: Trailing 2-0 in the sixth, the Aviators got on the board as Olivia Garcia scored on an error off the bat of Maddy Baldwin.

Behind 2-1 in the seventh, Alexa Torres singled to center to start a one-out rally. Alexa Garofalo then reached on an error. Sofia Garcia followed with a walk. One out later, Mia Gil stepped up to the plate and delivered a line drive to left center to score three runs and give AIE the lead 4-2. The rally continued in the seven-run inning.

With a runner on first in the bottom of the inning, AIE pitcher Mia Gil struck out the next batter, and then fielded a comebacker to start a double play with shortstop Sara Utrera and first baseman Alexa Torres to seal the title.

District Semifinal: AIE 5, Miami Country Day 0: Trailing 1-0 in the sixth, Miami Country Day loaded the bases with two outs. Sophomore Emily Gonzalez then made the play of the game with a diving catch to save three runs. The Aviators’ offense added insurance runs en route to the victory.

Mia Gil: 12 strikeouts vs. Miami Country Day; 8 strikeouts vs. Chaminade Madonna; 1 earned run; game winning double against Chaminade-Madonna.

Emily Gonzalez: Game saving diving catch vs. Miami Country Day.

Alexa Torres: Double against Miami Country Day to drive in the first run; seventh inning hit with one out to start the rally against Chaminade-Madonna.

Alexa Garofalo: Exceptional catching performance throughout district playoff.
