Aiken County School board to discuss modified school calendar next week

Feb. 23—Aiken County Board of Education will discuss the approved 2023-24 modified school calendar at a special called meeting on Tuesday, March 1.

Board Chairman John Bradley told board members that a called meeting was needed for training for the Headstart Program. Since the training is an hour, Bradley proposed also discussing the modified calendar that was approved during the board's Jan. 25 meeting. While board members approved the calendar, they had some concerns they wanted addressed before voting to implement the calendar.

"We needed to get some answers to some things before we voted to implement it and (Superintendent King) Laurence, the last time we talked you said you were ready for that to happen," Bradley said Tuesday night. "So I would propose we add that as the second item on the agenda for that special called meeting for next Tuesday."

Concerns brought up by board members during the Jan. 25 meeting included how to address topics such as remediation, athletic schedules, band schedules and more.

"I want to know specifically what kind of remedial program we're going to have," Bradley said during the Jan. 25 meeting. "What we're going to do, all we've done is added two weeks of remediation ... one at the end of two of the nine weeks. I want to know what's going to happen in detail. Who we're going to serve, how we're going to get them there, is it going to cost them anything, what are we going to teach them, who is going to teach them, are we're going to pay them, what's it going to cost us. I want to know all of that."

The meeting will be at 6 p.m. at the district office at 1000 Brookhaven Drive and livestreamed at acpsd.net.
