Aiken man drowns in Savannah River after kayak overturns

Oct. 1—Police have released the identity of a 72-year-old man who died in the Savannah River on Thursday.

Wayne Weinberg, of Aiken, died while on a kayak ride with a witness, according to an incident report from the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.

Officers responded to the boat ramp at Betty's Branch in Evans, Georgia, on Thursday afternoon in reference to a drowning in the Savannah River, said police.

Witnesses stated they were kayaking on the Savannah River and "saw an overturned kayak and heard screaming," according to the report.

EMS responded and treated the other person who was riding in the kayak with the victim.
