Aiken Senior Life Services expanding efforts to serve Aiken County's older residents

Nov. 8—In addition to moving to a new location earlier this year, Aiken Senior Life Services has increased its efforts to support the independence, health and well-being of Aiken County's elderly residents.

"So much has changed," the nonprofit's executive director, Aimee Hanna, told the Rotary Club of Aiken during its meeting Monday at Newberry Hall.

Senior Life Services has expanded its program categories from two to three.

Enrichment is the new one. Nutrition and transportation are the others.

"We are opening our doors and our arms even wider to our community," Hanna said.

Presentations by a licensed laugh therapist and Dacre Stoker, a descendant of Bram Stoker who wrote the novel "Dracula," have been among the enrichment offerings.

Through a partnership with Aiken Regional Medical Centers, Senior Life Services is assisting patients who need transportation to get home after being discharged from the hospital.

"They are keeping us very busy," Hanna said.

In September, Senior Life Services started a Saturday shuttle service.

"It is free to the general public as long as they call before noon the Wednesday before," Hanna said. "We will pick you up at your home and take you to a sports event or take you to a restaurant (as long as it is) in the urban area. That is the caveat."

Senior Life Services recently completed the state licensing process for bingo. Games are held each Monday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the nonprofit's new headquarters at 1310 East Pine Log Road.

The more than 19,000 square foot building formerly was the home of a store known as Boots, Bridles and Britches.

Senior Life Services' base of operations used to be located on Morgan Street.
