Aiken's McElwain wins SCJGA event
Jun. 2—Aiken's Kaylee McElwain started the summer golf season off with a bang.
McElwain, a rising junior at Aiken High School, won the girls' 13-18 age division at a South Carolina Junior Golf Association Players Series tournament May 21-22 at Cheraw State Park.
She posted rounds of 77 and 86 for a 36-hole total of 19-over 163, five strokes clear of York's Teryn Dalton.
McElwain was the Region 5-AAAA runner-up this past season and was also the top local finisher at the Class AAAA state championship tournament. She also competed for the Hornets' soccer and lacrosse programs.
A victory is worth 500 points in the Players Series, which will give players the opportunity to compete in a year-long points race toward future exemptions into SCJGA major championships.
The next event is scheduled for June 16-17 at Greenwood Country Club.
In the boys' 13-18 division, North Augusta's Andrew Baxley tied for 10th with a total of 5-over 149 and Aiken's Stern Massey tied for 47th at 23-over 167
