Air defense systems thwarted Ukrainian drone attacks, Russia says

Russia’s Ministry of Defense said its air defense systems intercepted several Ukrainian drones early Tuesday.

This is the latest drone attack Russia has blamed on Kyiv. There were no reports of injuries, but the wreckage of one drone shattered an apartment complex’s windows and damaged vehicles in suburbs outside Moscow.

Officials said flights at numerous airports near Moscow were temporarily suspended due to the attacks, which have come nearly every day over the past two weeks. The defense ministry also said two other drones were thwarted over the western Bryansk region that borders Ukraine.

Ukraine typically does not take responsibility for the drone attacks and has yet to acknowledge the latest strikes.

Ukrainian newspaper Ukrainska Pravda reported Tuesday that Ukrainian saboteurs — backed by Kyiv — carried out drone attacks at air bases inside Russia on Saturday and Monday, damaging two Russian bombers and two other aircraft.

The attacks took place at the Soltsy air base in the Novgorod region in northwestern Russia and against the Shaikovka air base in the southwestern Kaluga region. Ukrainian military intelligence spokesman Andriy Yusov told the Ukrainian LIGA.net news outlet that at least one warplane was damaged during the Shaikovka attack.

An Associated Press analysis of satellite images found that 10 Tupolev Tu-22M long-range bombers were parked on the apron of the Soltsy air base on Aug. 16, but they were all gone by Monday.
