I'll be the first to admit: I've always been skeptical of air purifiers. I was certain that the pricey tools were just glorified fans (spoiler: they're not). Despite rave reviews and "life-changing" stories I had heard from friends throughout the years, I persisted in my skepticism—that is, until I actually tried one.

Air purifiers do precisely what their name implies: purify the air. Allergens like dust, pollen, pet dander, mold spores, and other pollutants or toxins are removed from the air as the purifier works. The best ones come equipped with a HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filter, which means they can remove at least 99.97% of allergens, according to the EPA.

The use of air purifiers has become all the more prevalent over the last year, given the COVID-19 pandemic, so when LG reached out to see if I'd like to give their PuriCare™ 360 Single Filter Air Purifier with Clean Booster a try, I decided it was time to put aside my long-held doubt. After all, with all the time I spend vacuuming, dusting, and cleaning up surfaces, why wouldn't I pay just as much attention to the air I breathe?

According to LG's website, the device is meant to promote 360-degrees of clean air delivery. To distribute the clean air farther than most purifiers, it comes with an attached Clean Booster (this is a fan-like head that sits on top of the actual filter) that rotates 70-degrees. To leave you with the cleanest air possible, a True HEPA filter layer traps 99.97% of particles (up to six different kinds!), while a harmful gas filter removes odors, smog, and airborne chemicals. While this might all sound rather technical, the PuriCare 360 comes with a LED indicator system that changes from red to orange to yellow to green as the indoor air quality improves, so it's easy to "see" how clean or dirty your air is.

I live in a relatively small apartment, so I decided to put the purifier in the kitchen since it's the most central room—and arguably, the stinkiest, given how often I cook (and open the trash can). After an incredibly easy set-up, I turned it on and put it to work.

It immediately turned orange, an indicator that my air was not pure. After being on for a few minutes, I could see the LED light slowly transition to green, letting me know that my air had been cleaned. While the air felt lighter, I wasn't fully convinced, so I set out on another test. Since I can't see my air, I wanted to test not only how well it could dispel food smells, but also how quickly it would recognize them. Within several minutes of turning on the oven and starting to cook, the PuriCare 360 kicked into gear, almost instantly ridding my space of any cooking smells.

By far, my favorite feature of the PuriCare360 has been its ability to remove odor. In the month since I've owned it, not only does my apartment smell better, but as someone with a major case of the spring sniffles, I've been relatively allergy-free. The PuriCare360 is also compatible with the ThinQ app, so you can easily control it from your phone. And while the list of pros is long, I'd be remiss not to mention its size. While the unit itself is pretty stylish as far as purifiers go, it is rather large, so if you live in a smaller space, you might appreciate something that takes up a bit less room (my boyfriend often jokes that it reminds him of R2-D2). The unit itself is also pretty pricey. For nearly $700, it's definitely an investment, though it does include a 10-year warranty.

So, is it worth it? As a previous skeptic, I say yes. After all, there's a reason it has a five-star rating. While the price is steep, it's quiet, efficient, and has made a notable difference in my allergies. And let's be real: who knows what sorts of pollutants were lingering around my apartment before?
