Air quality emergency cancels or postpones concerts at the Jersey Shore

The region's air quality emergency has knocked out several outdoor concerts at the Jersey Shore.

The free Cousin Brucie Presents concert scheduled for Thursday, June 8 at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, has been postponed due to poor air quality, according to the Garden State Arts Foundation. Legendary New York radio DJ Bruce “Cousin Brucie” Morrow, Herman’s Hermits starring Peter Noone; Tommy Roe; and the Soundtrack of Our Lives featuring Deborah Rennard and Al Sapienza were scheduled to appear.

The ironically named Capt. Cream and the Forrest Fires are canceling their weekly show Thursday at Low Dive on the Asbury Park boardwalk.

"The irony is not lost on us that our show is canceled due to a forest fire," said the band on their Instagram.

They'll be back at Low Dive, formerly the Asbury Park Yacht Club, next Thursday.

The Haney and McCoy sunset cruise Thursday on the Navesink Queen -- cocktails and music on the Navesink River -- was canceled but they're hoping to reschedule.

The Pat Roddy Band show Thursday at the Blu Grotto in Oceanport has been canceled. The Roddy Band's show Wednesday, June 6 at Martell's Tiki Bar on the boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach was also called off.

Carl Gentry, who has played with Jon Bon Jovi and more, did not take stage Wednesday at the Sandbox at Seastreak Beach in Highlands. The show was canceled.

“This air has me sick!” Gentry said. “I called them to cancel and they had just decided to close anyway. Good all around.”

In related news, the Kim Marie's Eat n’ Drink Away restaurant in Asbury Park closed 5 p.m. Wednesday “for the safety of our staff and customers …. decisions about tomorrow will be posted when available! Stay safe everyone!”

The Seafarer Bar in Highlands closed “due to poor air quality” Wednesday and remained closed on Thursday. That meant no Pat Guadagno show there on Wednesday. Guadagno will play Wednesday, June 14.

The Via Ripa band, scheduled to play the Seafarer on Thursday, said that their show is canceled “due to the apocalypse” on their social media. Visit www.facebook.com/theseafarerbar for more info.

Air quality in the New York City metropolitan region — including most of New Jersey — was under a rare red alert Wednesday as smoke inundated the area from the latest set of wildfires burning hundreds of miles to the north in Canada.

Gov. Phil Murphy urged residents with heart and lung conditions to stay inside Wednesday and avoid strenuous activity.
