Air quality health advisory issued for Rochester region

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an air quality health advisory for ground-level ozone in Monroe, Wayne, Northern Cayuga and Oswego counties.

The advisory is in effect until 11 p.m. Friday, and the air quality levels in outdoor air are expected to exceed an air quality index value of 100 for ground-level ozone.

The advisory recommends individuals to limit strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects, especially for those with pre-existing respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease.

The advisory further suggests that people who may be sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants should consult their personal physicians.

For more information, visit the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation website or call the air quality hotline at 1-800-535-1345.

What is the Air Quality Index?

The AQI was developed as a way to standardize different pollutant levels on a single scale. When AQI values are high, it indicates that the health risk is greater.
