Airbnb issues global ban on parties, caps occupancy at 16

Airbnb announced Thursday it would immediately ban parties at all of its properties around the world to prevent guests from exposing each other and neighbors to coronavirus.

The company’s global head of hosting, Catherine Powell, said the strict rule comes after “a very small portion” of customers were found to have hosted large gatherings in violation of local health guidelines.

“With restaurants and bars closed in many places, some guests are using Airbnb for unplanned events,” she said in a video announcement. “When this happens, it can put you at risk, it damages our relationship with your neighborhoods and local communities and it’s even more disheartening during a global pandemic.”

Besides the party ban, which will be in effect until further notice, Airbnb also announced a cap of 16 people on all reservations made on or after Friday.
