The Voegele Historic Lofts at 211 N. Main St. opened its doors to community leaders Thursday to showcase its two new Airbnb units that are inside the brick building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Andrew Whapham, who resides at the apartment complex, and who is the proprietor, said the two Airbnbs, on the first and four floors, start at $160 per night.

The two apartments-turned-Airbnbs took four months to complete and feature a modern decor and upscale kitchen amenities, as well as internet service, elevator and air conditioning. The historic building has high ceilings, beautiful woodwork and large windows. The building was built in 1897.

Whapham, originally from Wooster, said he has quite a few reservations for the Airbnbs, which are furnished with modern appliances and hints of the history of Mansfield.

History of the downtown building

The Voegele Brothers Building began as a multi-purpose business providing coal distribution as well as being a construction materials supplier. The building's 20th century history includes The Voegele Dinning Company, primarily known as a confectioner, tobacco and fireworks manufacturer and distributor.

In 1999, the building was converted to a residential building by fully modernizing the mechanical systems while preserving much of its original charm and Richardsonian Romanesque architectural, which supported its inclusion in the national register.

Located in the historic downtown Carrousel District, the Voegele supports 25 two- and three-bedroom apartments with shared laundries.

Jodie Puster Snavely of Destination Mansfield, who was among the guests for the Richland Area Chamber-Economic Development ribbon cutting and open house Thursday, said the Airbnbs are a welcome addition to the hospitality offerings in the city and Richland County.

"It's a new building inside an old building," he said, giving tours to guests.

The Voegele Historic Lofts offer outdoor gathering space with gazebo, seating, grill and fire pit.
