It happened Monday afternoon at Wild Florida. The airboats were conducting tours on Cypress Lake in Osceola County when they crashed.

The attraction said all airboat activities are suspended until further notice while the U.S. Coast Guard investigates.

One expert who’s operated airboats for years said these crashes happen more often than many think.

Clint Adams said captaining an airboat on the water isn’t as easy as it looks.

“There’s a lot of blind corners out here,” he said. “You get in the tall crass and you can’t see what’s on the other side. The bigger ones, they are harder to control. You got a lot more material to handle, a lot more weight.”

In 2018, there were 33 airboat crashes, 27 in 2019, 25 in 202, 33 in 2021 and 37 in 2022.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s website, there have been more than 150 accidents involving airboats across the state.

“When they collide it’s very, very dangerous,” Adams said.

A total of 30 people including two boat captains were on the airboats at the time of the crash. Sixteen were hurt, 14 of them with minor injuries and two in critical condition, according to hospital officials.

In a statement, Wild Florida said in part “We would like to apologize to all visitors involved and pray for a speedy recovery for all injured parties. We are cooperating fully with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the U.S. Coast Guard and other state and local authorities as they conduct an official investigation of the incident. We are also conducting our own internal investigation to determine the cause.”

All airboat activities are suspended until further notice.
