Airplane loses tire, spins out on runway at Holmes County Airport

News in Brief

HARDY TWP. ‒ An equipment malfunction damaged a plane after it landed Thursday morning at the Holmes County Airport.

No injuries were reported.

According to a news release from the Holmes County Sheriff's Office:

An 83-year-old pilot from Hanover, Pennsylvania, was flying a 2020 single-engine Vans Aircraft R-8 with a co-pilot.

The pair were heading to Blakesburg, Iowa, from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and stopped in Holmes County to refuel.

After landing, a front wheel came off the aircraft as it made its way to the terminal, caused landing gear to dig into the runway.

The aircraft spun 180 degrees and came to rest on the south edge of the runway, the report said. The aircraft had minor damage to the left wing, rear tail and rear tail wheel.

The Cleveland office of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was contacted and sent field investigators to the scene. The airport was closed to all air traffic during the investigation. Staff reported the airport was open again by 4 p.m.
