Airport blues? This one is hosting 'fun runs'

Airports aren't doing too good right now.

But with a lack of travellers and planes, one airport has found some creative ways to get some extra cash, hosting private events like 'fun runs'.

Thousands of families took a run around Prague's Vaclav Havel airport last weekend, paying up to $21 to enter.

If running through the airport grounds is not for you, a 'staycation' in the on-site hotel is also on offer.

Deserted airport lounges have also been transformed into private event space, making them a new venue for birthdays and weddings.

Dominika Hejmankova is a spokesperson for the airport.

"As traffic is generally lower this allows us to make it possible for the public to visit places places that are usually inaccessible. For example people can organise their birthday parties, stay overnight right in the terminal or prepare their weddings directly at the airport."

This might still be a far cry from having 17.8 million passengers going through the airport last year.

But a rare behind-the-scenes tours are made available because terminals remain largely deserted.

Visitors can now get up close to the airport's day-to-day operation as well as discovering the cockpit, too.
