Home Sweet Home Alone star Aisling Bea has explained exactly why her character talks with an English accent in the upcoming family movie.

Following the Christmas comedy's recent trailer drop, a number of fans online took issue with Disney over the Irish actress not speaking in her natural voice for the film.

On hand to calm everyone down, the This Way Up star uploaded a video onto Twitter yesterday (October 12) to respond to all the backlash.

"Hello, to everybody that has been wondering online why I have an English accent in the new Home Alone movie: it's because the character's English," she quipped.

"She's from England and if she was from England and she spoke with an Irish accent then that would be quite strange. But she's English. If she was Australian she'd probably have an Australian accent. If she was from Texas then she'd probably have a Southern accent. If she was from Scotland then she might have a Scottish accent.

"If she was Irish she would speak very much like I do, because I am from Ireland. But this character is not from Ireland... she's from England, and so that's why I'm doing the accent."

Meanwhile, Bea's caption brilliantly pointed out: "It is also not a true crime documentary about a Mother who leaves her son alone to fend for himself, because if it was I would be in jail."

Bea plays Carol Mercer in the movie, mother to Archie Yates's Max Mercer, who must fend off a couple of thieves looking to break into his family home after his parents leave him behind by accident.

And not only that, but did you know that original Home Alone legend Devin Ratray is returning as Buzz McCallister for the latest instalment?

Home Sweet Home Alone comes to Disney+ on November 12.
