Akron-area girls basketball teams ready for OHSAA district semifinals: What we know

With the opening week of the OHSAA girls basketball tournament complete, the fun begins in earnest this week with district semifinals and finals.

The venues switch this week to neutral sites and teams from Greater Akron scatter all over Northeast Ohio.

Coaches often say that everyone is good once you get to the district tournament. Here's an overview of what to look for at the district level:

Who are the Akron-area teams remaining in the Division I OHSAA girls basketball tournament?

Four teams are headed to Perry this week.

In the Northeast 1 district, which will play at Perry in Stark County, Walsh Jesuit and Ellet each advanced the district semifinals. The Warriors are set to face Painesville Riverside, while Ellet has a date with Canton McKinley.

Green passed the test of getting by Stow last Thursday. The Bulldogs will be joined by Archbishop Hoban in the Northeast 2 district, which will play up at Perry in Lake County.

Closer to home, Hudson advanced with a huge win over Louisville in the Northeast 3 district. The Explorers face a big test when they face Jackson in the district semifinal at Ravenna.

Meanwhile, Highland faces a backyard rival in the Northeast 4 district, as it will take on Brunswick at Valley Forge

Who are the Akron-area teams remaining in the Division II OHSAA girls basketball tournament?

Top-seeded Copley rolls into the Northeast 3 district at Lake where it will face Field in the semifinal. Tallmadge also heads to Lake to face Northwest.

St. Vincent-St. Mary and Norton each advanced to the Northeast 4 district at Valley Forge. STVM faces Lutheran East while the Panther will play Oberlin Firelands.

In the Northeast 5 district, Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy and Woodridge travel all the way to Elyria for a district semifinal.

When do the Division I girls basketball teams play their OHSAA district games?

It's a Tuesday-Friday schedule for Division I districts.

Opening semifinals Tuesday will be played at 6 p.m. Walsh will play Riverside, Hoban faces Shaker Heights and Highland tips with Brunswick at this time.

Hudson will face Jackson at 7:30 p.m. at Ravenna in the second half of the doubleheader.

Meanwhile, Green will play Hathaway Brown and Ellet tips with McKinley at 8 p.m.

All four district final games will tip at 7 p.m. Friday.

When do the Division II girls basketball teams play their OHSAA district games?

In Division II, it's a Wednesday-Saturday split for districts.

Semifinal doubleheaders open Wednesday at 6 p.m. with Copley playing Field and STVM playing Lutheran East.

At 8 p.m. Wednesday, Tallmadge takes on Northwest, Norton plays Firelands, and CVCA tips with Woodridge.

On Saturday, the district final is at 1 p.m. at Valley Forge, while finals at Elyria and Lake will be at 7 p.m.

When and where are the OHSAA girls basketball regionals?

In Division, I, the four district champions head to Medina on Feb. 28 for regional semifinals. The Northeast 3 champion faces the Northeast 1 champion at 6 p.m. with Northeast 4 will play Northeast 2 at 8 p.m. The regional final is set for March 4 at 7 p.m.

The Division II regional qualifiers will split up.

At Barberton, the Northeast 2 and Northeast 1 champions play at 6 p.m. with Northeast 3 and Northeast 5 champions playing at 8 p.m. The regional final is set for 7 p.m. March 3.

Meanwhile, the Northeast 4 champion at Valley Forge advances to the regional at Mansfield Senior. The regional semifinal is Feb. 28 at 6 p.m. vs. the Northwest 1 district champion with the regional final set for March 3 at 7 p.m.

When and where is the 2023 OHSAA girls basketball state tournament?

For the third straight year, the state final four will be played at University of Dayton Arena.

Division II opens championship week March 9 with semifinals at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The Division II state tile game will be March 11 at 10:45 p.m.

Division I state semifinals will be March 10 at 6 and 8 p.m. The Division I title game closes out championship weekend March 11 at 8:30 p.m.
