A 2-year-old boy was shot, apparently unintentionally, inside an Akron home Friday afternoon, police said.

The boy is being treated for his injuries and was said to be in stable condition at Akron Children's Hospital.

Four other children, ages 6 months to 13 years, in the home at the time of the shooting were found unharmed. The other children have been placed in the custody of Summit County Children's Services, Akron police said Monday in a news release.

Police said they responded to Children's Hospital about 3:30 p.m. Friday after the 2-year-old boy was brought there by his mother with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Detectives obtained a search warrant and went to the child's home on Koerber Avenue, where they recovered a handgun and other evidence, police said. The home is in Akron's Kenmore neighborhood, east of Manchester Road and close to the Firestone Park neighborhood.

Exact circumstances of the shooting are unknown and detectives continue to investigate, Akron police said.

Police are asking anyone with information to call detectives at 330-375-2490 or 330-375-2Tip; call the Summit County Crime Stoppers at 330-434-COPS; or text TIPSCO with tips to 274637. Callers can remain anonymous.
