Akron high school boys basketball state champions club welcomes 2023 Buchtel, Hoban teams
It was a historic Sunday for city of Akron high school boys basketball teams at University of Dayton Arena.
For the first time, two teams located within the city won state championships in the same year, as Hoban won in Division I to end the day after Buchtel won in Division II to start the day. It was part of statement day for Northeast Ohio basketball, which went 4-for-4 in winning state championships. Lutheran East and Richmond Heights, both located in the Greater Cleveland area, won in Division III and IV, respectively.
Buchtel's win is the school's first ever in boys basketball, while Hoban won a title for the second time in program history. Their wins pushed Akron's state championship total to 20 overall.
