Akron issues boil advisory for second water main break in Cuyahoga River Valley

More Akron residents are advised to boil potable water following a water main break on Akron-Peninsula Road near Ira Road, the City of Akron said in a Monday news release. This is the second break in the Cuyahoga River Valley area in two days.

Repairs to this water main will require Akron Water to temporarily reduce water pressures, expanding the boil advisory zone issued Sunday, the notice states.

Akron water customers on Oak Hill Road, Major Road, Everett Road, Bolanz Road and the addresses of 4683 and 4563 Riverview Road and 4451 Akron-Peninsula Road are urged to boil their water.

The first water main break occurred on Sunday. The city issued a boil water advisory for water customers in Boston Township on Oak Hill Road and Major Road, which remains in effect.

How long with the water boil advisory be in effect?

"This advisory will be in effect until further notice, but for a minimum of 18 to 24 hours after the repair is made and normal pressures are restored," the news release states.

The city expects the water main break to be repaired Monday.

How to make water safe during boil advisory

Drinking or cooking water should be brought to a full boil for a minimum of 2 minutes and returned to the proper temperature before use, according to the City of Akron.

Loss of pressure can also result in discolored water and a temporary increase in lead levels.

To reduce lead exposure in drinking water, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends running the tap until there is a noticeable temperature drop. Then run water for 30 seconds to three minutes before using.

Use cold water for cooking, drinking and baby formula as boiling does not reduce lead, according to the EPA. Cleaning the faucet aerator, which is located where water exits the faucet, can also help.
