Akron man pleads guilty to involuntary manslaughter in man's shooting in 2020

An Akron man who was scheduled to go on trial for murder this week instead accepted a plea agreement.

Brandon Jones, 38, pleaded guilty Monday to involuntary manslaughter, a first-degree felony, with a three-year gun specification, in Summit County Common Pleas Court.

Judge Alison Breaux will sentence Jones on March 14.

Jones was arrested in the shooting death of Donald Bailey on Aug. 17, 2020.

Bailey, 37, was found with a gunshot wound to the torso in the area of Dover and Bellevue avenues in West Akron. He was taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General, where he was later pronounced dead.

Jones was originally charged with two counts of murder and one count each of felonious assault and having weapons under disability. This is a charge that means a person was prohibited from having a firearm because of a previous conviction.

Attorney James Reed is representing Jones. If the case had gone to trial, he planned to argue that the shooting was self-defense, according to court records.
