Akron Mayor Shammas Malik privately sworn in. What to know about public swearing-in event

Shammas Malik placed his left hand on a wrinkled copy of the Quran held by his partner, Alice Duey. Holding his right hand up, he repeated the oath of office as the new year began.

Roughly 40 people watched the private ceremony in Akron City Hall as J. Bret Treier of Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease law firm swore in Malik as Akron's 63rd mayor at 12:01 a.m. New Year's Day.

Both Malik and his predecessor Dan Horrigan wished Akronites a Happy New Year on X, formerly known as Twitter, before and after the event.

"My family and I wish all of Akron a safe, happy, and healthy New Year! Being your Mayor over these last 8 years has been the honor of my professional lifetime," Horrigan said on X. "Thank you, Akron for the honor of serving you."

What to know about Mayor Shammas Malik's public swearing-in ceremony

The community can attend Malik's public swearing-in ceremony at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, at the EJ Thomas Performing Arts Hall, located at 198 Hill St.

The Hearts for Music and Akron Symphony Orchestra Gospel Choir will kick off the ceremonial event with performances before a prayer, presentation of colors, National Anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance at 1:45 p.m.

Guests will speak at 2 p.m. Carla Davis and Lauren Marsh will perform "A Change is Gonna Come" at 2:25 p.m. before Malik's swearing-in and speech.

A 6 p.m. celebration at House Three-Thirty at 532 W. Market St. will follow the swearing-in.

Both events are free, and tickets can be reserved online.

Sensory bags will be provided for guests with sensory sensitivities. Translation headsets for Spanish and Nepali speakers can be reserved by contacting Kelly McHood at kelly@togetherforakron.com.

Metro RTA is offering free rides Saturday "honoring Akron's past and future leadership."
