Akron PD, U.S. marshals arrest 135 people, seize 22 guns in violence-reduction campaign

Akron police and U.S. marshals arrested 135 individuals and seized 22 firearms in 30 days as part of a gun violence-reduction campaign, according to a U.S. Marshals Service news release.

A slew of regional police departments participated in Operation Triple Beam, which focused on arresting individuals connected to violent crimes, repeat offenders and gun and drug seizures.

"The Akron Police Department and U.S. Marshals Service joined efforts in this initiative to make Akron and Summit County a safer place for our residents," Akron Police Chief Steve Mylett said in the release. "We will continue to work diligently to control violent crime, specifically gun and gang related crime, in Akron. I hope our residents appreciate the level of commitment their officers have and how dedicated they are to keeping them safe."

Police said a notable arrest occurred on Nov. 7, when the task force apprehended a 30-year-old Akron man wanted in the assault of a pregnant woman during an alleged robbery.

He is charged with strangulation, parole violation and domestic violence, according to the Summit County Sheriff's Office. He was released under parole supervision roughly a year ago after serving 10 years for aggravated robbery in 2012.

Pete Elliot of the U.S. Marshal's office for the Northern District of Ohio described the operation as a "major success."

"I am proud of the hard work our fugitive task force, the Akron Police and our other state and local law enforcement partners in the Akron area," Elliot said in the news release.
