Akron RubberDucks announce promotional schedule for 2022 that includes 28 fireworks nights
There may be some question whether the Cleveland Guardians will start their season as scheduled amid ongoing labor strife.
But their minor-league affiliate, the Akron RubberDucks, plan to "play ball" as scheduled, with their home opener set for April 15.
The only challenge — as usual — is not the league commissioner or the labor union but a bigger disrupter: old Mother Nature. Heavy rain and even a snow squall can cancel a home opener in Northeast Ohio. And snow has already been an obstacle for the RubberDucks this offseason as they prepare to defend their championship.
How much money will the Canal Park project cost?
The team and the city of Akron are in the midst of an ambitious $2.95 million project to replace each and every seat in Canal Park ahead of the ballclub's 25th season.
And a couple of snowstorms that buried the city, with a few ice storms mixed in, have made this already monumental task even more daunting.
There are 7,630 seats in Canal Park.
RubberDucks General Manager and COO Jim Pfander said about a third of the new seats are already installed.
The weather did delay the installation some as workers had to shovel out sections of the seating area before they could install the seats.
But Pfander said he's confident the effort — along with renovations to the ballpark's suites and improvements to the heating and cooling systems — should all be done in time for the home opener.
"It's going to look like a whole new ballpark," he said.
Lockout won't impact Akron RubberDucks season
And the ongoing labor talks will not have an impact on the minors.
Pfander said the only effect on the RubberDucks is that any player on the Guardians' protected 40-man roster is not permitted to play or work out for the Akron Double A affiliate until a new labor agreement in the majors is in place.
"We're just geared up for the start of the season," he said.
