Akron's Ring doorbell program is expanding. Here's how to get a free camera
Akron's popular Ring doorbell program is opening up to all residents.
The initiative started as a pilot program in Wards 3, 4 and 5, funded with $45,990 in federal American Rescue Plan Act money in 2022. The first phase attracted 724 applications, with over 400 cameras distributed across the three eligible wards.
The expansion of the project is funded through ARPA money as well.
According to a news release from the city, the program is part of Akron's efforts to fight neighborhood crime and package theft.
"As a crime deterrent, the doorbell camera will provide residents and law enforcement with added visibility into neighborhoods," the release said.
Here's what you need to know about the city's expansion of its Ring doorbell program.
How do I apply?
Beginning May 1, residents can fill out a form to request a camera. The form can be found online here: https://tinyurl.com/AkronDoorbellCamera
Renters will need to fill out a landlord attestation in addition to the request form. The landlord attestation can be found online here: https://tinyurl.com/LandlordDoc
Distribution is limited to one camera per household or applicant.
How do I get my camera?
Approved applicants will be notified via email and will select from a variety of pickup option.
Who is eligible?
All Akron residents are eligible, whether they are homeowners or tenants.
Individuals who received a camera during the pilot program aren't eligible to participate in the second phase of the project.
How many cameras are available?
Each ward has 300 cameras to distribute on a first come, first served basis.
Cameras will be distributed until supplies are depleted.
What will this cost?
The program is free for residents, funded by ARPA money.
