Al Shabaab militants attack hotel in Somali capital

Al Shabaab gunmen attacked a hotel in Somalia's capital on Tuesday (December 10), police and the militant group said.

No details on casualties have yet been given about the attack on the Syl hotel - which was also targeted by the Islamist militant group in 2016.

It's located near the presidentIal residence and is popular with government officials and lawmakers.

Al Shabaab's military spokesman, Abdi-Aziz Abu Mus'ab, said the group's fighters were inside the hotel compound, which he called the quote "home to enemy officials".

Al Shabaab frequently launches bomb and gun raids in Mogadishu in its bid to topple Somalia's UN-backed government.

The group once controlled much of the country but was forced out of the capital in 2011 and has since lost most of its other strongholds.
