Al Unser Jr. cameos on Mayberry Man series set at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park

Following the 2021 release of the Indiana-based feature film "Mayberry Man," writer and director Stark Howell recently finished filming for an upcoming TV series that picks up where the film left off.

Mayberry Man: The Series, which features local actor Brett Varvel as the main male lead Chris Stone, sees Stone navigate a newfound relationship with the town's sweetheart, Kate, played by actress and show producer Ashley Elaine.

The town of Danville, Indiana, represents Mayberry in both the feature film and TV series.

“I’ve always been a fan of the show, but I was shocked to discover the spirit of Mayberry still exists today within the tight-knit Mayberry fan community,” Howell said. “It’s the perfect setting to tell modern-day, family-friendly stories that express the virtues of the fictitious town of Mayberry that we all love.”

On Thursday, April 27, the cast and crew wrapped up filming at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park for the series that will air in the fall of 2023.

Special to the set was retired American racecar driver Al Unser Jr., who was a fan of the film. Howell wrote in a special cameo for Unser where Stone is researching a role for a new movie about racing when the two-time winner of the Indianapolis 500 shows up to give him a few driving tips.
