Alabama continues to roll on recruiting trail, land top 100 prospect

Alabama continues to have success out on the recruiting trail. As of late, the Crimson Tide have landed multiple high-end prospects, and that now includes yet another one on Sunday afternoon.

Four-star linebacker Shawn Murphy out of Unity Reed High School in Virginia announced via his Instagram Live that he was joining Alabama’s 2022 class, making him commitment No. 12 for Nick Saban.

According to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, Murphy is rated as the nation’s No. 66 overall prospect, No. 8 linebacker and No. 2 player from the state of Virginia. He chose Alabama over Ohio State, LSU, Florida and several others.

Here is what recruiting analyst Brian Dohn has to say about Murphy:

Good, lean frame with length. Carries 200 pounds like it is 180. Excellent explosion and body control. Runs well and possesses tremendous stop-start ability. Filters through traffic and locates ball carrier. Diagnosis plays quickly. Plays downhill and physical. Good blitzer. Chases down plays from behind. Needs to continue to develop upper body strength. Ability to stack and shed needs development. Work on depth drop in passing game important. Multi-year starter at elite program. Day 1 NFL draft potential.

On Rivals.com, Murphy is listed as a five-star prospect and the No. 26 player overall. He is now the second off-ball linebacker to commit to Alabama for the 2022 class, joining fellow top-100 prospect Robert Woodyard.

Considering all the talent that was added at the position in the 2021 class (Deontae Lawson, Kendrick Blackshire and Ian Jackson), it doesn’t look like the Tide is looking to lighten up on added premium players at the position.

Prior to Murphy’s commitment, the Tide was sitting with the No. 8 overall class (No. 3 in the SEC). Now it looks like they could climb closer to having a top 5 class after the latest addition.
