Alabama football assistant coach Charles Kelly has accepted a position as defensive coordinator at Colorado, according to the Boulder Daily Camera. New Colorado coach and Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders recently took the Buffaloes job and is building a staff for a program that has struggled mightily in recent years.

Kelly served as Alabama's assistant defensive coordinator and safeties coach and has been at UA since 2019. It will be his first coaching job in the Pac-12 Conference. The former Auburn defensive back has had coaching stops at Jacksonville State, Nicholls State, Georgia Tech, Florida State and Tennessee.

Kelly's departure would mark the first from Alabama coach Nick Saban's staff this season. The Crimson Tide is set to play Kansas State in the Sugar Bowl on New Years Day, and features two experienced seniors at safety in Jordan Battle and DeMarco Hellams.

Sanders compiled a 27-5 record at Jackson State over three seasons.
