Alabama football defensive back Tony Mitchell, who was part of the Crimson Tide's No. 1-ranked signing class for 2023, has been suspended from the team following an arrest on a drug charge, Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said Monday.

"Tony Mitchell has been suspended from the team and all team activities until we get more information about the situation and what his legal circumstance is. Everybody's got an opportunity to make choices and decisions. There's no such thing as being in the wrong place at the wrong time," Saban said following Alabama's first practice of the spring. "You've got to be responsible for who you're with, who you're around and what you do, and who you associate with and the situations you put yourself in. It is what it is. There is cause and effect when you make choices and decisions that put you in bad situations."

Mitchell was arrested last week in Holmes County, Florida, in the Florida Panhandle, on charges of marijuana possession with intent to sell and/or deliver. Police also confiscated scales and what they described as a large amount of cash. A passenger in Mitchell's vehicle, Christopher Lewis, was arrested on the same charge as well as for carrying a concealed weapon without a permit.

Mitchell, a safety prospect from Thompson High School in Alabaster, committed to Alabama last summer over offers from Tennessee, Auburn, Texas A&M and others.
