Alabama football has its next offensive coordinator.

Tommy Rees is expected to join the Crimson Tide as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach after serving in the same job for Notre Dame, according to multiple reports Friday.

He replaces Bill O'Brien, who left to become offensive coordinator for the NFL's New England Patriots after two seasons in Tuscaloosa.

By joining the Crimson Tide, Rees, 30, leaves his alma mater, where he has been on staff since 2017. From 2017-19, he served as quarterbacks coach. He added the offensive coordinator role in 2020.

Rees was a quarterback for the Fighting Irish from 2010-13 and was on the team Alabama beat in the BCS national championship team 42-14. Over four seasons with Notre Dame, Rees passed for 7,670 yards and 61 touchdowns with 37 interceptions over 47 games.

After a brief stint with Washington in the NFL in 2014, he went into coaching. Rees was first a Northwestern graduate assistant in 2015. Then he joined the San Diego Chargers as an offensive assistant in 2016.

This season, Notre Dame ranked 60th in the FBS in total offense at 396 yards per game. The Fighting Irish were also No. 41 in points per game (31.8).

In 2021, Rees led the No. 20 scoring offense (35.2) and No. 46 offense in yards per game (426.7). In 2020, Notre Dame finished No. 30 in points per game (33.4) and No. 27 in yards per game (448.5).
