Alabama women's basketball adds transfer forward Meg Newman from Arizona State

After losing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Alabama women's basketball made its first move of the offseason on Wednesday.

The Crimson Tide picked up a commitment from former Arizona State forward Meg Newman, she announced on Twitter. Newman will help Alabama with the loss of center Jada Rice, who graduated after two years with the Crimson Tide.

"We feel like we’ll be bigger and have more depth in the paint as well," said Alabama coach Kristy Curry. "We have to have more of a paint presence with points and impacting the boards than we had this season consistently, consistent impact. Having a paint presence with finishes and a post presence will be really, really important."

The 6-foot-3 sophomore joins a frontcourt group that continues the Crimson Tide's desire for height in the transfer portal and recruiting, including top recruit Essence Cody, a 6-foot-3 McDonald's All-American.

Newman played in 28 games for ASU last season, starting five, and averaged 3.9 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.
