Alachua County school district readies to usher in the 2022-2023 school year

The first day back to school is creeping up quickly and soon teachers will open their doors to a host of students who will shuffle along in the hallways.

The new school year starts in Alachua County on Aug. 10 and there are several options for parents to save money when shopping for supplies.

The first step is to go get your child's supply list for each grade at www.sbac.edu/backtoschool.

"Preparation is absolutely key to helping any family and any student have a smoother start to the school year, which means being ready with school supplies, knowing what clothes your child is going to wear that first morning, with getting them used to the appropriate bedtimes and wake up time rather than doing it for that first day," said Jackie Johnson, spokeswoman for Alachua County Public Schools.

Tax-free holiday

The sooner parents start shopping, the better. Florida's 13-day sales tax holiday started Monday, giving a tax break on most supplies. Some exemptions apply.

Parents may find that teachers request additional supplies to spruce up the classroom. Tissues, hand sanitizer and wipes are must-haves to keep the classroom clean, especially since COVID-19 is still making it around the nation.

Parents can also get supplies at the 21st Annual Stop the Violence Back-to-School rally this Saturday. The event is hosted by the Martin Luther King Jr. Commission of Florida.

The first 3,000 kids that attend the event will go home with a free backpack. The rally begins at 9 a.m. at the Alachua County Fair Grounds.

On Aug. 5-9, the district will host its meet-and-greets for teachers. Parents and children can get a sneak peek at their school campus, classrooms and learn what to expect going into the school year.

On Aug. 8, families can also attend the Family Empowerment Summit, which will take at Trinity United Methodist Church, located at 4000 NW 53rd Avenue. The first 250 people who attend will be given free meals.

There will be a discussion on varying topics, such as mental health, student behavior,  and attendance.
