Alamogordo Daily News wins best website award from NM Press Association

ALBUQUERQUE ― The New Mexico Press Association recognized the best of New Mexico's newspaper writing, photography and advertising at the Better Newspaper Contest banquet on Saturday, Oct. 28.

The Alamogordo Daily News won first place for best website in the Daily Class I category.

"Straightforward, uncluttered page with good organization of sections and top stories. Headline presentation strong, draws the eyes. Photo presentation also strong without being overwhelming," wrote a judge.

Alamogordo Daily News reporter Nicole Maxwell and News Director Jessica Onsurez won second place in the Daily Class II best ongoing/continuing coverage category for their reporting on then-Otero County Commissioner Couy Griffin's efforts to retain his elected seat.

Of their work the judges wrote: "Good story that summed up numerous other stories involving Couy Griffin that this newspaper submitted. In part, they could all be part of one large continuing coverage entry."

News Director Jessica Onsurez received several awards for her work published in other Gannett owned newspapers: second place in news writing for the Ruidoso News, first and second place in the Daily Class I breaking news-digital category for theFarmington Daily Times; second place in Daily Class II news for the Carlsbad Current-Argus.

A newspaper from each division is awarded for General Excellence, the top award. This year's winners are: Albuquerque Journal, Daily Class I; Roswell Daily Record, Daily Class II; The Deming Headlight, Weekly Class II; Taos News, Weekly Class I.

D'Ammassa is now editor of the Deming Headlight.

The contest was judged by the Arizona Press Association.

The awards were handed out at the NMPA 114th Annual Convention held in Albuquerque.
