Alaska sports notebook: Allie Ostrander finishes 16th at USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships; Eagle River's Devyn Williams rolls perfect game at USBC Open Championships

Jun. 29—Soldotna's Allie Ostrander took another major step in her comeback journey on Sunday when her strong finish in the women's 5,000 meters produced a 16th place result at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

It marked her third competitive race in the last year since returning from taking time off to seek treatment for an eating disorder. She recorded a time of 16:12.03 after running a pair of sub-16 minute 5Ks in the Freihofer's Run for Women and Portland Track Festival earlier in June.

Ostrander was pacing to finish somewhere in the 20s for most of the race before she kicked it into high gear for final 1,000 meters. Her 2:58.70 over that stretch was the 12th-fastest in the field and her final 400 meters of 1:08.02 was 10th fastest.

Alaskan bowls a perfect game in championships

In his debut at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships, Eagle River native Devyn Williams rolled a perfect 300 game in the tournament last week at the South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event kicked off in March and will run until July 18 and features more than 50,000 bowlers from around the globe.

His 12 consecutive strikes marked the 38th perfect game of the tournament and he rolled games of 197 and 258 to finish singles with a 755 series. Williams finished with a 2,032 all-events total in the open division after adding 653 in doubles and 624 in team scoring.

Posies Women's Cycling Series concludes

The Arctic Bike Club wrapped up its annual Posies Women's Cycling Series last Thursday. The stage race took place over a two-week period between Anchorage and Eagle River.

The first stage was a time trial at Moose Run on June 14, the second was a hill climb on Potter Drive on June 16, the third was a criterium race at Gruening Middle School on the June 21, and the final stage was a road race on Ruff Road on JBER on June 23.

The Women's A category is comprised of experienced racers and standout cyclist Amber Stull of Anchorage finished atop the elite standings with a time of 2:54:05. Emily Schmieg won the Women's B division and the Women's C division was won by Pamela Tittle.

Nearly a dozens records set at Yukon River Quest

The 2022 Yukon River Quest saw 10 paddling marathon records fall including men's stand up paddleboard, men's solo canoe, women's tandem canoe, men's tandem kayak, women's tandem kayak, men's four person canoe, women's four person canoe, mixed four person canoe, and half quest.

Australian Lincoln Dews won the men's SUP with a record time of 47:46:32. The team named Every Child Matters won the four-person canoe category with a record time of 50:23:11.

The four-man canoe team, Something Else Entirely with members from the Yukon and Ontario, crossed the finish line in Dawson City in 39:08:12 to break the previous record of 39:32:43 that was set by Team Kisseynew in 2008.
